It has been few years that the Law Society of Upper Canada (LSUC) has created a new category alongside lawyers and paralegals. This new category is named Foreign Legal Consultant (FLC). The LSUC has established rules and regulations to be able to monitor their conduct and Iranian Lawyer candidate seeking such permits must pay a membership fee, possess liability insurance, renew her law practice license in Iran and produce a “good standing” certificate from Iranian bar association to the LSUC, and be recommended by Canadian law practitioners to be eligible to receive LFC certificate.

A knowledgeable and experienced Iranian lawyer holding LFC permit would be an excellent consultant to Canadian jurists dealing with Iranian clients in the fields of civil litigations, domestic disputes, assets, commercial contracts, real estate, and inheritance and even criminal cases.

Sometimes, one of the parties involved in a legal dispute produces a document generated in Iran, impossible for the courts to verify its authenticity.  As an example, in a family court case where the court had granted the mother custody of the child, the husband produced a letter to the court claiming it to be an order from the Revolutionary Court in Iran, testing her credibility in courts. I was asked to provide expert opinion regarding the case in court. I made the necessary review of the document in question, contacted the courts in Iran, and was able to inform the court that the document in question was in fact a forgery.

Sometimes, there are needs to clarify and explain contracts prepared by lay persons signed by trusting individuals usually a relative or a close friend in Canadian courts by an impartial and experienced Iranian legal expert, who is able to verify and substantiate claims pertaining to laws in Iran. As well, in preparing for their cases, Canadian lawyers can benefit from the counsel of an LFC expert, and if necessary produce documents from a country such as Iran. As well, sometimes there are parallel cases launched in Iran and in Canada, which necessitates exciting and interesting mutual cooperation between a licensed practitioner trusted by the LSUC and Canadian lawyers.

We live in a time of global village, and with the increasing volume of trades and commercial activities between Iranian expatriates in Canada and their old country in social, cultural, commercial and legal fields, lawyers must always be able to update themselves to assist their clients in the best way possible by utilizing the services of LFC professionals.
